Licking County Concrete & Paving

Asphalt Paving

New asphalt driveway installation and paving, laid over a properly graded and compacted aggregate base for long-term stability.

Asphalt Paving for Ohio's Paving Season

Asphalt is a lower-cost alternative to concrete for driveways and larger paved areas, and it flexes with ground movement better than concrete does — a real advantage through Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles. That flexibility only pays off if the base underneath is built right: we excavate to proper depth, install and compact a graded aggregate base course, then lay and compact the asphalt in the correct lift thicknesses.

Asphalt paving in Ohio is a seasonal trade — ambient and base temperatures need to be reliably above roughly 50°F for the mix to compact and bond properly, which generally puts our paving season from spring through fall. We'll give you a realistic install window at the estimate rather than promising a date the weather won't support.

"A lot of the asphalt driveways we get called out to repair in Licking County were paved on a cold, wet day just to hit a customer's deadline. Asphalt laid too cold doesn't compact right, and it shows up as rutting and surface breakdown within a couple years — sometimes faster. We'd rather push a start date two weeks than pave in conditions that won't hold."
  • Graded and compacted aggregate base under every driveway
  • Correct lift thickness and compaction for residential and commercial loads
  • Paving scheduled to Ohio's actual temperature windows
  • New driveway installation and full resurfacing

A properly installed asphalt driveway typically lasts 15–20 years with regular sealcoating and prompt crack repair. Skipping maintenance shortens that significantly — water intrusion through unsealed cracks is what ends most asphalt driveways early.
Asphalt needs ambient and base temperatures reliably above about 50°F to compact and bond correctly, which generally means our paving season runs spring through fall. We won't pave in conditions that compromise the install just to hit a calendar date.
Plan on keeping vehicles off new asphalt for at least 3 days, and avoid turning your wheels sharply while stationary on it (which can scuff the surface) for the first couple weeks while it fully cures.
A standard residential asphalt driveway typically runs $3,000–$8,000 depending on size, base condition, and thickness. See our full cost guide, or our concrete vs. asphalt comparison to weigh both materials against your budget.
