Licking County Concrete & Paving

Concrete Repair & Resurfacing

Slab repair, crack repair, and resurfacing for concrete damaged by frost heave, settling, or age — an honest read on repair vs. replacement.

Repair What's Fixable. Replace What Isn't.

Ohio's freeze-thaw cycle is hard on concrete. Water gets into hairline cracks, freezes, expands, and widens the crack a little more every winter. Add settling from a base that wasn't compacted properly to begin with, and a 15–25 year old driveway or walkway in Licking County often shows real damage — heaved slabs, spalling surfaces, and cracks wide enough to catch a mower wheel.

We inspect before we quote anything. If the base and framing of the slab are still sound, crack repair, joint resealing, or a resurfacing overlay can extend its life significantly for a fraction of replacement cost. If the base has failed or multiple panels have settled unevenly, resurfacing just masks a problem that will resurface within a season or two — at that point we recommend full replacement and tell you why.

"In our experience, about half the 'my driveway is cracking' calls we get in Licking County turn out to be legitimate repair candidates, and about half need full replacement once we get eyes on the base. The tell is usually whether the cracks are isolated to expansion joints and surface-level, or whether there's real elevation change between panels. We walk you through which one you've got before you spend a dollar."

Often, yes — if the crack is isolated, the base underneath is still stable, and there's no significant elevation change between the two sides of the crack. We inspect first and give you a straight answer rather than pushing a full replacement by default.
The two most common causes we see in Licking County are inadequate base compaction at the time of the original pour, and normal freeze-thaw expansion at joints and existing cracks over many winters. Deicing salt use in the first winter or two after a pour can also accelerate surface scaling.
Repair addresses a specific crack or damaged section. Resurfacing applies a new thin concrete overlay across the whole existing slab to refresh the surface and hide cosmetic wear, but it only works if the underlying slab is structurally stable — it won't fix a base problem.
Isolated crack repair and joint resealing typically run a few hundred dollars. Resurfacing an existing driveway runs less than a full replacement but more than simple repair. Full replacement runs $3,500–$14,000+ depending on size — see our cost guide for detail. We'll always quote the least expensive option that actually solves the problem.
